There will be very few competitive election races that will face voters in Northern Carbon County when the county holds its 2017 municipal primary election on Tuesday. In fact, there is only one contested municipal race, that being for the Republican nomination for a six-year term on the Lehigh Township board of supervisors.

District Justice Richard Claypool arraigned an East Stroudsburg couple and one Beaver Meadows man Thursday on charges they conspired to manufacture and distribute heroin in Monroe County. Michael Blas, 32, of East Stroudsburg, his wife Lacy Martin, 29, also of East Stroudsburg and Daniel Novak, 36, of Beaver Meadows were charged with possession and conspiracy with the intent to deliver about 15 bricks of heroin.

Man sentenced for minor corruption

A Carbon County man was given a time-served prison sentence on Thursday in the county court after previously admitting to having a sexual relationship with a teenage female. Timothy Mark Andrews, 29, of Beaver Meadows, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to 150 days to one year in prison on a corruption of a minor in a sexual manner charge, a felony three.

Nineteen first-time offenders were placed in Carbon County's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program on Tuesday by Judge Joseph J. Matika. If a person successfully completes all conditions of the program, their record is wiped clean.

Voters in all five school districts in Carbon County, as well as those in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows in the Hazleton Area School District, will be electing members of the boards of education in each district in 2017. The number of directors to be elected this time around, as well as the respective terms of the offices are: a Jim Thorpe Area School District – five directors, one for a two-year term and four for four-year terms.

Red Cross to install smoke alarms

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign will visit Beaver Meadows in Carbon County at 9 a.m.Feb. 18to install smoke alarms in homes that need them and teach people about what they can do now to be prepared should a fire break out in their home. Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire.

A “writ of summons” has been filed in Carbon County court by the husband of a woman killed in a crash involving a Nesquehoning police officer. Michael Sauers, individually and as administrator of the estate of his wife, Carola R. Sauers, filed notice of a suit naming the borough and Steven Homanko, of Beaver Meadows, as the defendants.

We applaud the 17 Carbon County municipalities which have become charter members of the Carbon County Council of Governments. But what about the other six, which are not members? The county commissioners on Thursday enacted an ordinance setting up the agreement among the 17 under the auspices of the state’s Intergovernmental Cooperation Law.

$20M bond for hospital pensions approved

Carbon County commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved an ordinance that will make it the guarantor of a $20 million bond series on behalf of Blue Mountain Health System to help cover a frozen pension fund at Lehighton‘s Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital. “We believe in the hospital and want to keep them as a top employer here in the county,” Commissioner William O’Gurek said.
